Description

Country house accommodation off the beaten track in historic Mortimer Country on the north Herefordshire/south Shropshire borders where England meets Wales.

Henry and Carolyn Chesshire welcome you to Lower Buckton, a handsome old farmhouse in a rural hamlet just above the meandering river Teme. There are superbly comfortable bedrooms with views for miles, roaring log-fires in the drawing room and dining room plus amazing food!

Award-winning breakfasts and delicious dinners are served using seasonal food either home-grown and reared or locally sought, bought and caught from small-scale artisan growers, producers and suppliers thus supporting the local, rural community and economy. Lower Buckton is a multi-national, supermarket-free zone! Slow Food at its best.

Food plays such an important role at Lower Buckton that Carolyn offers Cooking Good cook days and Best Breakfast cookery courses in her sunny kitchen complete with huge AGA and Food Safaris exploring the area’s food and drink culture and heritage.

Lower Buckton is open all year round for dinner, bed and breakfast. Guests are welcome to create their own House Party of “family and friends” for get-togethers, anniversaries and celebrations. It’s also an ideal house for small board-meetings, business lunches and private dinners.

Ideally located for exploring the area’s rich historical past: there are important English Heritage and National Trust properties within a ten mile radius and ruined castles and ancient churches galore! The quiet roads and lanes are fun for cycling and there are many walks, including national trails from the door.

Historic Ludlow in south Shropshire is just ten miles away, the Welsh border is just up the lane and Lower Buckton is well-placed for visiting the three main county towns in the area: Shrewsbury, Hereford and Worcester. There are many shows and festivals throughout the year featuring food, drink and the arts. Some of the more famous ones include The Ludlow Festival, The Ludlow Marches Food and Drink Festival, The Hay Literary Festival and The Mortimer Country Food Fair which Carolyn co-organises.

You can bring your dog and even your own horse! There are stables and paddocks. The riding country is world class with quiet lanes and bridlepaths on the doorstep – ride three counties and two countries all in a day with a pub-stop at lunchtime mandatory!

Lower Buckton is open all year round and Henry and Carolyn Chesshire welcome their guests with masses of hospitality: she’s the cook and he’s the butler!
