Northwich is a town in Cheshire, on the Rivers Waver and Dane, about 12 miles northwest of Crewe. The local underground deposits of rock salt have been exploited since Roman times, originally by panning but now with the assistance of modern technology. Salt is the primary association with this town, Northwich's motto being Sal est Vita (salt is life) and a museum dedicated to this particular heritage.
