Maryport is a port at the mouth of the River Ellan on the Northwest coast of Cumbria and roughly 25 miles southwest of Carlisle. It was originally one of the many Roman forts and settlements called Alauna, before becoming a small fishing village quaintly named Ellenfoot. The towns Golden Lion Hotel boasts many illustrious visitors, most notably, Charles Dickens who was possibly there to explore the predominantly rural areas including the beautiful Lake District located which is within the county.
