Sitting on the River Brit is the Dorset town of Bridport; it is about 15 miles west of Dorchester and 2 miles from the coast. It is an ancient town with much of a maritime connection; it remains a major centre for rope and net making. The town was also the model for Thomas Hardys Port Bredy. Bridport is popular with fossil hunters and walkers as it lies on the world heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach.
