Hastings is a popular town and resort on the extensive East Sussex coast, some 13 miles northeast of Eastbourne. Such is its location it has a fabulous past synonymous with battles, warfare and invasion: The Romans built a castle at nearby Pevensey, which is where the Normans landed in 1066 and as a result William the conqueror built a castle at Hastings the following year. Hastings was also originally the chief of the Cinque Ports, a channel defence alliance but ultimately it failed to prevent the town being sacked by the French twice during the 14th century. Such a vast history and great surrounding country are two of this towns many assets.
