Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, on the beautiful South Downs on the River Ouse, about 8 miles northeast of Brighton. It was an important site during Anglo-Saxon times, and around the early 12th century William de Warenne built a castle here, whose keep still dominates the surrounding country side from its hilltop plateau. Lewes centre is equally majestic in history and is characterised by well preserved Georgian architecture.
