Pevensey is a village in East Sussex, roughly half a mile from the sea and 5 miles northeast of Eastbourne. Two thousand years ago it would have been on the coast, and around AD 340 the Romans built a fort here, called Anderitum as a defence against the Saxons. Its walls and towers are well preserved which is unusual as it was ultimately besieged and captured by the Saxons.. Pevensey had an important port and was one of the Cinque Ports. Inland are the Penvesey Levels, the charismatic South Downs and the end of the Weald, offering plenty to explore.
