Newport is the administrative centre of the Isle of Wight, on the River Medina, about 5 miles south of Cowes and just to the north of the islands geographical centre. The town contains plenty of evidence of Roman Occupation, most notably, Cypress Road Roman Villa. During the Middle Ages the area was subject to frequent French raids, and as a result the nearby Carisbrooke castle was built in defence. Alongside such a charismatic history, the Isle of Wight has some equally interesting countryside.
