Lincoln is a cathedral city on the River Witham about 35 miles northeast of Nottingham and 40 miles west of Skegness. A fort situated at the hilltop site would have dominated the surrounding flat countryside during pre-Roman Times, and it became a strategic settlement of importance during the later Roman occupation due to its location at the intersection of the Fosse Way and Ermine Street. Lincoln's middle age importance is still evident, and may be seen in the street patterns that remain today, as well as some prominent housing native to the age.
