York is a city and unitary authority. It is 22 miles northeast of Leeds. It has been populated by the Romans and then Saxons and Danes who named it Jorvik. The Jorvik Viking centre is one of York's main attractions after the Cathedral, but even just meandering through the beautiful ancient streets is a joy.
