Hostel Accommodation in the UK
Hostels vary from mansion blocks to stately homes and can offer the visitor a superb way of staying in a property with stunning character and history – for a budget price.
Hostels in London
Much of the accommodation in a London hostel is shared – if you pay a little more it is possible to get a single room. One of the best hostels to stay at is the YMCA. Most of the hostels in and around the UK are single sex establishments, fine if you are going with a group of friends but not so good if you want to go as couple. View all Hostels in London
Backpacker Hostels
The popularity of backpacker hostels is very apparent in the UK’s cities, so accommodation is plentiful. Many don’t have curfews and have a mixture of rooms to support mixed groups. Facilities can be very good indeed.
University Campus Accommodation - Halls of Residence
Yet another alternative choice of accommodation when you are travelling around the UK is to enquire at the local university. Those universities that are not holding conferences or other events during the long summer break will often let out some of the rooms on campus while they are empty. Accommodation on the campuses can be quite basic, depending on the type of university that is offering to rent out rooms.
Most student halls of residence or campuses have small individual rooms and students share a kitchen and sometimes a common room when they are in halls or on campus. Letting out the rooms during the holidays means that universities can help themselves by topping up their funds with rent from student accommodation that is empty during the holidays.
Help & tips:
Hostels and Campuses
- Generally shared hostels are for singles only; many will not cater for couples as dorm accommodation is fairly standard
- It is advised to book well in advance, as some hostels have odd opening times or light staff cover
- If you fancy a more lively establishment, it may be worthwhile checking if the hostel has a curfew – some do
