Edinburgh hotels are ‘most profitable in UK’

Edinburgh hotels are reaping the rewards as many more enjoy the capital.

As more and more people are feeling the pinch and deciding to ditch foreign holidays in favour of short British breaks, Edinburgh hotels are reaping the rewards to the downturn as a new survey has revealed that hotels in the Scottish capital are making more money per room than anywhere else in the UK.

According to business advisors PKF, Edinburgh has come out on top and beaten London because many people have been put off by the riots that engulfed the English capital in the summer. They also said that rooms ‘yield’ in Edinburgh for the month of August was £108.53 – the highest anywhere in the UK, and almost double the rates for Aberdeen and Glasgow.

According to many in the hotel industry, Scotland as a whole is doing well, with Aberdeen also showing a marked improvement as rising oil prices pushed up the number of business visitors staying in the city. Occupancy in Scottish hotels in August was also found to be higher than in any other part of the UK.

Alistair Rae, a partner in PKF’s real estate and hospitality sector said: “London hotel occupancy suffered in the wake of the riots. However, these figures show that Scotland really did benefit from the staycation trend with remarkable levels of occupancy and rooms yield. “
