Luxury hotel to open in Yorkshire…for dogs!

The UK's first dedicated dog hotel and spa is set for a round of-a-paws when it opens soon.

Yorkshire is about to see many more four-legged friends arrive in the county as a super-comfy hotel in the north of the region has unveiled plans to open the UK’s first dedicated dog hotel and spa.

Thirty million pounds has already been spent on improving Raithwaite Hall in Sandsend with the hotel welcoming human visitors just two weeks ago. Now however, they plan to take things one step further – a 28-room ‘dog hotel’ that will have spa facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, grooming, special food and obedience classes.

The suites will be in a separate part of the hotel called ‘the Keep’ with the facility due to open in Autumn of next year.

Not many hotels in the UK have facilities that allow pets to stay in the same accommodation as their owners, but this idea could see potential holidaymakers take their dogs on a family holiday and could see a great deal of new revenue for hoteliers and guesthouse owners too.

Pets are a billion pound industry with pet food alone worth £1.8billion in Britain. The number of UK households with dogs has also overtaken cats for the first time in the last five years, with an estimated 8.3million dogs in the UK.

Paul Ellis, managing director of the northern-England based Skelwith Group, owners of the 80-acre Raithwaite Hall estate said: “We’ve opened a fantastic hotel for humans and want to be able to offer the same guest experience for dogs too. When people are choosing hotels it can often be easier to find venues that cater for their children than their dog. Dogs are often a massive part of the family so we want to look after these travellers too.”
