Dumfries is a market town on the River Nith, and is the largest town in southwest Scotland, about 30 miles northwest of Carlisle. It became a Royal Burg in 1186 and it was in the church of the Monastery of Greyfriars in Dumfires that Robert Bruce murdered the Red Comyn, so causing the Scottish wars of independence. Dumfries was also the hometown to the much cherished Robert Burns.
