Dumbarton is an industrial town on the northern shore of the Forth of Clyde in West Dunbartonshire, 12 miles northwest of Glasgow. Dumbarton is well regarded as the southwestern terminus of the diagonal Highland Line, the northeastern terminus is Stonehaven. Above the shore is the tremendous Dumbarton Rock, the sheer volcanic plug of black basalt, a site for a Royal Castle in the late middle ages, but only some fortifications from the 17th-18th centuries remain.
