Merthyr Tydfil is an industrial town at the head of the Taff Valley, some 22 miles north of Cardiff. Known simply as Merthyr, the industrial past has left a resounding legacy within the town where its coal and iron working industry was an important fixture in the industrial revolution—this was particularly well exemplified when, in 1804 Richard Trevithick built the world’s first steam railway.
